Lecture: Savouring the Journey; Enhancing the destination – the joy of quilt making by hand (Hybrid)
Jan’s quilting journey began in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and has led her to some very unanticipated places, including the Royal Ontario Museum, a traveling exhibit that began at the Art Gallery of Windsor and toured the country, Quilt Canada, and most rewarding of all, many quilt guilds, quilt shops, and classrooms, where she learned as much as she taught! Her approach to quilt making is consciously and deliberately low-tech, as she prefer a process that unfolds slowly, allowing for ideas and images to surface over time. It is a variation of the idea of mindfulness, as she loves the opportunity to revel in the process and to refine her ideas as the quilt grows.
See this journey on display as Jan introduces us to 30 handmade quilts, of various sizes and techniques, including English Paper Piecing, Applique, Foundation Paper piecing, Sashiko, hand embroidery embellishments, and simple hand piecing.
Workshop: Joy of Hand Quilting (IN PERSON ONLY)
Wednesday November 6th (10- 3:30)
Join long-time YHQG member and experienced hand quilting teacher Jan to explore hand work techniques. Spend your morning making a flower block with English Paper Piecing (EPP) hexies. Learn how to use EPP templates, join your pieces and applique them to a background fabric. In the afternoon, put an orphan block to good use learning the fundamentals of hand quilting such as stitch lengths, tips for consistency and how to achieve the quilted look you are after. Enjoy a day in-person with quilting friends and the tactile experience of these hand work techniques.
This full day workshop is offered at a special price: $50/$60 (members/guests) and a supply list for the workshop is available here
